Review: Tomorrowland is an ambitious, sprawling tale involving different generations, time travel and visions of the future. If there's one simple fact that the film clearly establishes during its expansive run-time, it is that humanity's collective actions will have a direct impact on the days and years to come. And so, the world of tomorrow as depicted here can either be a post-apocalyptic disaster (climate change or nuclear war, take your pick) or a gleaming embodiment of mankind's finest achievements.
When we are introduced to an older Frank (Clooney) and the teenager Casey, they're already well acquainted and appear to be co-conspirators on to something big. Soon after, we zip to each of their backstories to the time when, as a young inventor, Frank (Robinson) was rebuked by David (Laurie).
But Frank did get the attention of David's from-the-future assistant of sorts, Athena (Cassidy, deadpan delivery bang on) who thinks Frank is brilliant and gives him a badge that'll change his life forever.
Bird takes the risky route by juggling non-linear narratives. A bulk of the story is devoted to Casey up to the point where she meets Frank, after which the film coasts along on Clooney's charm. There's a bit of humour too, thanks to a few chuckle-moments courtesy Clooney and Cassidy.
Excising some expository dialogue as well as perhaps a tighter edit in the second half would have been preferable. Nonetheless, there's plenty for kids to enjoy - laser guns, jet packs, space ships and plenty of tricks to fire a fertile imagination.
At the same time, it also manages to mix in a message about environmentalism and cautious idealism regarding the future.
